- Business Insider 00:00January 18, 2020The 16 best songs in history that were written by teenagersChance the Rapper/Billie Eilish/YouTube Teenagers have written some of the most striking, emotionally tender, and relatable songs in music history.
Billie Eilish's hit "Bad Guy," which she co-wrote with her brother Finneas O'Connell, is the latest stunning addition to that category.
Adele, Taylor Swift, Chance the Rapper, Lorde, Halsey, Avril Lavigne, and Khalid also made our list.
Insider's 16 favorite songs written by teenagers are listed below, in no particular order.
Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. If you're still one of those people who believe teenagers have nothing important to say, or don't know what they're talking about, allow these songwriters to prove you wrong.
There are artists who've written some of the most striking, emotionally tender, and relatable songs in music history — before they even turned 20 years old.
Insider rounded up 16 of the best songs ever written by teenagers. They are listed below in no particular order.Adele's debut single, "Hometown Glory," was the first song she ever wrote. She was 16 years old.
Save for the Bob Dylan cover ("Make You Feel My Love"), Adele is the sole writer or lead cowriter on every song from her debut album, "19," which was named for her age when she wrote most of them. But her first-ever single, "Hometown Glory," stands out because of its unique origin story.
"It was actually the first song I ever wrote from start to finish," Adele said in a 2008 interview with Blues & Soul.
"It was kind of about me and my mum not agreeing on where I should go to university. Because, though at first I'd wanted to go to Liverpool, later I changed my mind and wanted to go to university in London. But, because I love being at home and I'm really dependent on my mum, she still wanted me to go to Liverpool," she explained. "So in that way it was a kind of protest song about cherishing the memories — whether good or bad — of your hometown."
"Bad Guy" made Billie Eilish the first person born in the 21st century to have a No. 1 hit.
Billie Eilish cowrote her debut album — 2019's Grammy-nominated "When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" — alongside her brother and producer, Finneas O'Connell. They began work on the album when she was 15 years old and recorded the vast majority of it in his childhood bedroom.
Eilish came up with the concept for "Bad Guy," the album's funkiest song and biggest hit, as a sarcastic exaggeration of her persona.
"It's basically making fun of everyone and their personas of themselves. Even mine," she said during an interview with KIIS FM. "The initial idea for the song is, like, people who have to tell everybody that they are a certain way all the time? They're not that certain way."
"In general, I feel like you will never catch a bad b---- telling everyone she's a bad b----," she continued. "If you're going around all the time saying, like, 'Yeah, I'm bad, I'm always breaking rules and doing this and doing that.' You're not. I know that because I used to say that and I wasn't."
Chance the Rapper wrote the first draft of his debut mixtape as a senior in high school. "Brain Cells" is a lyrical standout.
Chance The Rapper/YouTube
"Brain Cells" was one of Chance the Rapper's "first ever recordings," a song that got "remade over and over" until it became the wittiest and most introspective track on his debut mixtape.
The title of that mixtape, "10 Day," refers to the 10 days of suspension Chance got during his senior year at Jones College Prep for smoking weed, when he wrote and recorded much of the project.
As a high schooler, Chance recorded his music in a studio run by YOUmedia, a space run by the Digital Youth Network and Chicago Public Libraries and available to Chicago high school students. It has computers available to be used by students who don't have one, and a performance space where Chance honed his skills as a rapper.
"It's so dope that I was able to be the age that I was when I was coming up," he told The Fader. "People were just realizing how to use YouTube on a DIY level. Twitter, SoundCloud — all that s--- was just starting to pop when I was making '10 Day.' A lot of people out of Chicago were able to flourish because it was so new."

The video was also heavily inspired by "Grease," "Say Anything," and "Risky Business."
Here are all the details, references, and Easter eggs you might have missed.Nick Jonas kicked off the music video with an homage to "Risky Business," by sliding into the frame and mouthing the words to "What a Man Gotta Do."
He wore sunglasses, a button-down shirt, underwear, and socks as he danced.
It was quite similar to the iconic scene done by Tom Cruise in the 1983 movie.
In "Risky Business," Cruise played a teenager named Joel who went wild when his parents left him home alone. The actor famously lip-synched to Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock and Roll."
Rather than dancing home alone, Nick was joined by Chopra Jonas, who also recreated the slide across the floor.

Some actors who don't watch their own films include Reese Witherspoon, Tom Hanks, Jesse Eisenberg, and Julianne Moore.
Others, like Adam Driver and Joaquin Phoenix, say they've only seen a couple of their projects.
Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. Although actors make a career out of being watched, not all of them enjoy seeing themselves on-screen.
Here are 11 actors who say they don't watch their own movies.Adam Driver typically doesn't watch his own work, but he made an exception for "Star Wars."
Jemal Countess/Getty Images for Lucille Lortel Awards
In a 2019 interview with Seth Meyers, "Star Wars" star Adam Driver said that he has never been a fan of watching his own movies.
"I'm used to doing plays. I came from a theater background, so it never really equated to me … like why would I want to watch that? So long as I know what it feels like … that's good enough for me," Driver said.
Even though he doesn't really watch his own work, the actor made an exception for the final film in the "Star Wars" Skywalker saga since he's such a big fan of the franchise.
Plus, he wanted to see how the final film looked with the addition of CGI since he shot most of his scenes on a green screen.
"You're standing in front of the screen and they're like, 'Trust us. Your lightsaber is working … There's space behind you. It looks really cool,'" he explained.
Tom Hanks said he believes watching himself in movies is a "horrible mistake."

Although he's been in some of Hollywood's most iconic films, Tom Hanks told ABC News in 2016 that he doesn't watch much of his past work, including hits like "Forrest Gump," "Philadelphia," and "Cast Away" — which all scored him Academy Award nominations for best actor.
He said he doesn't watch his own flicks because he thinks doing so is a "horrible mistake."
"Because you never learn what to do. You only sort of learn what not to do. The thing about looking at the old movies is that they don't change," he explained.
Reese Witherspoon said she "would spiral into a state of self-hate" if she watched her own movies.
Emma McIntyre/Getty Images for Turner
During a 2010 interview with the Daily Express, Academy Award-winner Reese Witherspoon said she refuses to watch her past work and sometimes she even forgets about scenes she was in.
"I have absolute amnesia about every movie I have ever made," she said. "I won't watch them because if I did I would spiral into a state of self-hate."
Witherspoon went on to say that she has caught glimpses of her work and felt strange about it afterward.
She added, "I sometimes catch the odd clip of something. I look at it and think, 'I have absolutely no memory of that.' It's really weird."

Here's why celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Mila Kunis, and George Clooney live social media-free in today's uber-connected world.

Comedian Amy Poehler, of "Parks and Recreation" fame, says she's "not a real social media person," and largely avoids its altogether. "I try not to read too much online because I always get my feelings hurt, even if someone's flattering you."
"The amount of Instagram selfies seems crazy out-of-control," Poehler said in an interview with Paper Magazine in 2013. "Pictures [used to be] an addition to the experience. Now the picture is the experience."
However, Poehler's nonprofit, Amy Poehler's Smart Girls, does have a presence on Twitter and Instagram.
Her frequent co-star and longtime friend, Tina Fey, stays away from social media just as much. Fey also once said to Entertainment Tonight she would only join social media when she was able to show her nipples. When asked by a fellow actor why she wasn't on Instagram, Fey reportedly responded: "Why would I give my jokes away for free?”

Meanwhile, Benedict Cumberbatch's reasons for avoiding social media have more to do with the fact he thinks he would be a "disaster" online. "It would just consume me and I find that whole thing ultimately very toxic," Cumberbatch told People in 2016. "I’d much rather spend my energy doing what brought me to their attention in the first place, which is my work.”

That's still more than the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, who have a shared fortune of $30 million, Business Insider previously reported.
Nonetheless, the young couple announced their decision to "step back as 'senior' members of the Royal Family" and work towards financial independence in a statement released on January 8.
Here's how the British royal family makes their fortune.Every year, the Queen gets a chunk of cash from taxpayers called the Sovereign Grant.
Gareth Fuller/PA Images
It comes from the treasury and it's funded by taxpayers, according to the BBC.
The basic agreement is that the Queen gets the grant in exchange for surrendering all profits from the Crown Estate — the family's massive portfolio of properties — to the government. Every year, the Queen is given an amount of money equivalent to 25% of the Crown Estate's profits.
The Grant totaled $107.1 million (£82.2 million) in 2019, The Wall Street Journal reported.
The Sovereign Grant pays for the family's travel, palace upkeep and utilities, and royal employee payroll, according to official royal family financial reports. But The Telegraph notes that the grant doesn't cover costs of security and royal ceremonies — that money comes from a few other places.
The Queen's private income is called the Privy Purse.
Michaelpuche / Shutterstock.com
That money comes from the Duchy of Lancaster — a portfolio of land and other assets that's been in the royal family for hundreds of years. It contains $715 million (£548.6 million) worth of net assets (including 18,433 hectares of land) and is made up of residential, commercial, and agricultural properties, Wall Street Journal UK correspondent Max Colchester reported.
It brought in $27 million (£20.7 million) in 2019, according to The Journal. According to the royal family website, this sum helps with costs not covered by the Sovereign Grant — namely, it's used to pay "expenses incurred by other members of the royal family."
The Queen also has other valuable assets that add to her net worth.
Jane Barlow/PA Images via Getty Images
The Queen also outright owns Balmoral and Sandringham Estates, an expansive art collection, and other valuable assets that have been passed down from earlier monarchs, Wall Street Journal's Colchester said on a January 14 episode of The Journal's What's News podcast.
The unknown total value of Her Royal Highness' property makes it difficult to estimate her total net worth, according to The Journal. A royal finance expert did tell The Journal that the royal family members are "millionaires, not billionaires."
In 2016, The Sunday Times estimated the Queen's net worth to be $442.92 million (£340 million).

- Business Insider 21:24January 15, 2020'Coldplay' singer Chris Martin says he embarrassed his daughter Apple at her job in a clothing storeColdplay front man Chris Martin appeared on "The Ellen Degeneres Show" on Wednesday, and revealed that he'd accidentally embarrassed his daughter, 15-year-old Apple, at work.
"My daughter works in a clothing store. It's her first job, and she's about to be 16, and I'm so proud of her," Martin began, adding, "She's making her way in the world."
But the musician told host Ellen Degeneres that Apple didn't have a great reaction when he stopped in to visit her at work one day.
"I just went to see. And I thought, 'I better buy something.' So I took a T-shirt from the rack and I lined up in the queue," Martin said.
When Apple saw her famous dad in line to check out, she got angry and mouthed "Dad, get out," according to Martin.
"I felt terrible, so I moved to the other line, just holding my T-shirt, and really scared of my daughter," he joked.
The musician said he paid for his shirt, but that he didn't know what to do with the fudge he'd brought for Apple, who "loves candy."
"So I said to the lady, 'Can you just give this to my daughter?'" Martin told Degeneres.
Apple ended up having a change of heart, and as she was leaving, shouted out, "I love you, Dad!" according to Martin.
Apple is Martin's child with ex-wife Gwyneth Paltrow, whom he separated from in 2014 after 10 years of marriage.

- Business Insider 22:05January 14, 202013 celebrities who don't identify as either male or femaleRick Rowell/Rich Fury/Getty Images / Toni Anne Barson/FilmMagic These 13 Hollywood stars have opened up about rejecting the gender binary.
"Stay With Me" singer Sam Smith, "Queer Eye" star Jonathan Van Ness, "Pose" star Indya Moore, and "Billions" star Asia Kate Dillon all identify as gender non-binary.
To be gender non-binary means that a person feels like they don't fit into a strictly "male" or "female" category.
Others, like "Batwoman" star Ruby Rose, have embraced a more fluid, label-free approach.
Visit Insider's homepage for more stories. A rising number of Hollywood stars are publicly embracing fluidity and challenging gender norms.
When a person identifies as non-binary, it means that they don't conform to the gender stereotypes that come with being assigned "male" or "female" at birth. Other people prefer not to use labels, but fall somewhere within the gender spectrum. Many people with fluid gender identities also prefer to use more inclusive pronouns, such as "they" and "them."
Here's a list of 13 celebrities who don't strictly identify as male or female.
Angélica Acevedo contributed to a previous version of this post.Janelle Monáe came out as non-binary on Twitter.
On Friday, Monáe retweeted a gif of a non-binary character from the animated Cartoon Network show, "Steven Universe," with the caption "'Are you a boy or girl?' I'm an experience.'"
"There is absolutely nothing better than living outside the gender binary," the original Twitter user wrote.
In Monáe's retweet, she added the hashtag "#IAmNonbinary" with the Saturn emoji. (Monáe did not clarify if her pronoun preferences have changed, but has previously used she/her).
Back in 2018, Monáe said that she identifies as pansexual.
Sam Smith is now using they/them pronouns "after a lifetime of being at war with my gender."
In a 2017 interview with The Sunday Times, Smith said they feel "just as much woman as I am man."
In a conversation with actress Jameela Jamil in March, Sam Smith talked about their gender identity as well as other topics relating to body image.
"I'm not male or female. I think I float somewhere in between," Smith said during the interview, which was part of Jamil's Instagram show "I Weigh Interviews."

According to TMZ, the "American Horror Story" star was spotted on the streets of NYC on January 6 alongside her new boyfriend, Sinisa Mackovic. Notably, she was also rocking a baby bump!
Her rep confirmed to USA Today that their little bundle of joy is expected to arrive this spring.
Back in 2016, Sevigny shared that she believes the key to having great skin is not having kids. "I think it's not having had a baby yet. Because I think the baby wear and tear and stress on your body is part of the reason why people say, 'Why do you still look so young?' I really think that that unfortunately ages women, especially when they have children in their 30s, not in their 20s. So I think, first and foremost, it's that and genetics," she told W Magazine.

Jackson announced she was pregnant in October 2016. The singer had previously halted her tour in April that year so she and her then-husband, Wissam Al Mana, could focus on "planning our family."
She gave birth to her son, Eissa Al Mana, in January 2017.
"For someone like me, raised in show business where self-concern is always a priority, how fortunate I am now to be concerned, first and foremost, with the welfare of someone else. Day after day and night after night, holding my baby in my arms, I am at peace. I am blessed. I feel bliss. In those moments, all is right with the world," she told Billboard.

"Santi was meant to be with me at this stage in my life. I'm patient, I don't work as much — even if it doesn't seem that way! It's the right time," Longoria told Parents Latina in 2019.

The singer "spearheaded the rise of post-millennial teen pop" and is "one of the most successful artists of all time," according to Rolling Stone, which also listed her as one of the top people who defined the millennial generation.

That put her estate, financial assets, and some personal assets under control of her father and a lawyer. Financial records are required to be disclosed as part of Spears' conservatorship, so her fortune and spending habits are well documented to the public.
According to most recent financial documents, Spears currently has a $59 million net worth. And while she loves to drop money on beauty, clothes, and real estate, she also favors everyday stores like Target and is actively involved in charity.

- Business Insider 13:53January 13, 2020YouTuber David Dobrik surprised fans with Justin Bieber and one of them said his new single was 'not that good' without realizing the singer was in the car with himDavid Dobrik / YouTube YouTuber David Dobrik took superstar Justin Bieber to meet some students at UCLA in California.
In typical Dobrik fashion — he followed the same format to surprise fans with Kylie Jenner back in March — Bieber was hiding in the back of the Tesla behind the passenger seat, waiting to jump out and surprise the students sitting in front.
"Today we're gonna see what people think about Justin Bieber," Dobrik said, followed by clips of him asking students just that.
"He'll always have a special spot in my heart," one student said. Another said she got into a bullying fight with a girl in fifth grade about who was a bigger fan.
"Well you're gonna have to bully her again because you're gonna have to show her you just met Justin," Dobrik said, just as Bieber poked his head from behind the seat. The student screamed and asked him, "Can I touch you?"
One girl, who said Bieber wasn't all that talkative when she met him before, started to cry when his voice appeared behind her: "Maybe he'll be more talkative next time."
A very honest student said he loved Bieber but his new song "Yummy" was "just not it" and "not that good."
Bieber shot out from behind him yelling "It's not it?!" and the student screamed in shock.
"OK 'Yummy' is good," he conceded, and started to sing along.
