- The Daily Beast 12:09April 11, 2021Novelist James Jones Showed Grace in the Face of Hemingway’s CrueltyCourtesy Kaylie JonesLast night I watched Episode 3 of Ken Burns and Lynn Novick’s Hemingway documentary on PBS. I’d watched the first two episodes the night before. The doc is very well produced and has interesting writers talking about Hemingway’s influence, Tobias Wolff and Edna O’Brien among them. But nothing earth-shatteringly new.Already, in the two first episodes, the division between the man and the myth is starkly apparent. By Episode 3, Hemingway is unraveling. Drunk all the time, self-medicating with pills and rivers of booze. Trading in one wife for another, as if he were discarding old clothes.Imagine my shock when suddenly, in Episode 3, appearing on our huge TV screen, was my father, dressed in his soldier’s uniform, the photo I love and often use when writing about him on social media. I heard the narrator saying... a young veteran... James Jones... and I instinctively sprang bolt upright on the couch.Read more at The Daily Beast.

- The Daily Beast 12:08April 11, 2021How Putin or Xi Could Blow It All Up for BidenGettyJoe Biden is on a roll. His approval rating is higher than his predecessor’s ever was. Almost three-quarters of Americans think he’s doing a good job handling the COVID pandemic. Sixty percent approve of his handling of the economy. So now is the time for him to start looking at what could go wrong, and turning his attention past our borders. It’s no coincidence that the one area where Biden’s ratings lag is at our southern border, where his efforts to fix the problems his predecessor exacerbated have hit problem after problem, all of them magnified by the knowledge of desperate immigrants that Donald Trump is gone. But that’s not the only place where the world is going to come knocking and, as Biden’s predecessors know, the results are often problematic. Barack Obama was elected to get us out of George W. Bush’s wars and in his first year he discovered how tough that would be and ended up actually increasing our troop levels in Afghanistan (over the objections of his vice president). George Bush was doing fine until Sept. 11, 2001. Bill Clinton’s first foreign crisis also took place in his first year in office with the Battle of Mogadishu and the notorious Black Hawk Down incident. George H.W. Bush’s first year in office saw both the Tiananmen Square uprising and massacre and a wave of revolutions in the satellite states of the crumbling Soviet Union that transformed the geopolitical landscape.Read more at The Daily Beast.

- The Daily Beast 12:04April 11, 2021If We Act Like We Already Beat the Coronavirus, That’s How It WinsGettyWe have a new epidemic of mixed messages on our hands. On the one side are those experts who remain very worried about another surge before the vaccine delivers us to the promised land and on the other those who see the vial as half-full and rising with each jab.One thing’s certain: The most highly contagious B.1.1.7 variant that brought Britain to its knees over the winter and is now ripping through Europe has landed in all 50 states in no time at all. Michigan’s been thrown back to its worst days. A dozen states and counting are walloped. That’s why Dr. Mike Osterholm warned last Sunday on Meet the Press that in the next two weeks, we will have “the highest number of cases reported globally since the beginning of the pandemic” and have to act accordingly. Although one in four adults is vaxxed and everyone will be eligible come April 19, he concluded, “we are at the beginning of a fourth COVID surge.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

- The Daily Beast 12:00April 11, 2021This Is the Only Matching Loungewear Set I Want to WearPhoto Illustration: Scouted/The Daily Beast/GarmentoryIf there’s any fashion trend that I will be taking into the rest of the year that is a holdover from quarantine, it’s loungewear. Give me the cute sweatshirts and trendy sweatpants. But once it’s warmer out, how will that trend stay relevant and comfy, without overheating? Sustainable fashion brand Toit Volant has created the perfect matching top and bottom loungewear set that feels both fashion-forward and lounge-appropriate.This matching set isn’t your average sweatsuit. It’s made from a 100% cotton fabric that is soft, breathable, and sustainable. The elasticated hem and arms give the top an elevated feel, making it a top that I will be wearing both as part of the set but also with a pair of jeans. Because of the sleeveless construction, I can wear my comfiest bra underneath without worry. The pants themselves are incredibly comfortable, with a stretchy waistband and wide, billowy legs. It practically feels like I’m wearing a skirt, except I don’t need to worry about an errant wind gust showing more of my legs than have seen the sun since March 2020. Each piece can easily be paired with other items, making these the most versatile loungewear pieces I own.Loungewear doesn’t need to be boring, and this matching set proves it. Toit Volant also makes the perfect party dress, the Verona Dress, that I highly recommend picking up for when you can finally see friends again.Read more at The Daily Beast.

I had to respond to what he was saying and the disturbing way in which he said it,” she tells Molly Jong-Fast in this bonus members-only episode of The New Abnormal. “I was just so sick of the Republican party from the very top levels of leadership constantly using these [racist] terms, which literally helped embolden people to commit acts of hatred against the community.”Read more at The Daily Beast.

- Guardian 10:00April 11, 2021Sound of Metal review – Riz Ahmed excels as a drummer facing deafnessRiz Ahmed gives a career-best performance in an astonishing drama that’s rooted in reality and fully captioned for allIn the 2020 drama Mogul Mowgli, co-writer and star Riz Ahmed played a British-Pakistani rapper struck down by a debilitating illness on the eve of his international breakthrough. In Sound of Metal, which premiered in Toronto in 2019, Ahmed plays an American drummer whose life is turned upside down by the onset of deafness. Stylistically these two films could not be more different; Sound of Metal is acutely realist with a docudrama edge, while Mogul Mowgli has been described as a “Sufi horror musical melodrama hybrid”. Yet both films are concerned with identity, a thorny issue with which Ahmed wrestled in the eye-opening 2020 short The Long Goodbye, and which runs through his finest work, including this remarkable Oscar contender.Ahmed is Ruben Stone, drumming with singer-guitarist Lou (Olivia Cooke) in the noise-merchant two-piece Blackgammon. They’re partners on and offstage, touring the US in a converted RV that doubles as a recording studio. But when Ruben’s hearing abruptly fails, he finds himself outside the bubble in which he has existed for so long. Continue reading...
