- Business Insider 00:57December 12, 2019Megan Rapinoe is so much more than the Sportsperson of the YearAP Photo/Seth Wenig On Monday night, Sports Illustrated recognized Megan Rapinoe with the 65th edition of what is, by all accounts, its most prestigious honor: the Sportsperson of the Year award.
The shiny silver cup was just the latest of many 2019 accolades for the pink-haired footballer, who feuded with President Donald Trump and fearlessly spoke out against injustice en route to a World Cup win, Golden Ball and Golden Boot accolades, and a Ballon d'Or.
While there's little doubt that the controversial US Women's National Team star was the natural choice to win Sportsperson of the Year, the magnitude and seemingly enduring nature of her impact on the women's sports landscape and beyond renders the award comparatively trivial.

There's little doubt that the controversial US Women's National Team star was the natural choice to win the award, which they bestow upon "the athlete or team whose performance that year most embodies the spirit of sportsmanship and achievement." - The Guardian(UK) 17:54December 11, 2019The Tories have a record number of female candidates – in seats they can’t win | Caroline MolloyWomen make up a third of Conservative prospective MPs, but most of the plum seats have gone to Boris Johnson’s male alliesIn what has otherwise been a pretty dispiriting election campaign, we were given one bit of seemingly good news at the outset. Record numbers of female parliamentary candidates are standing for election this year. Labour had considerably more female candidates than the Conservatives – 336 to the Tories’ 194 – though, oddly, they weren’t particularly vocal about this fact. The Conservatives are standing women in a third of the seats they are contesting, and Labour are doing so in fully half. Regardless, the story largely ran as an early “good news” piece for all the parties, with even the Conservatives standing a “record number” of female candidates, we were told. But have the parties given these women seats that they actually have a reasonable chance of winning? Or have most of the plum seats, the “winnable” ones, gone to men? Continue reading...

- Business Insider 16:00December 11, 20195 big problems I see with women's conferences, and how we can fix them to actually fight gender inequalityCourtesy of Erin Hatzikostas Erin Hatzikostas is a former corporate CEO turned career coach, speaker, and podcast host. She is the founder and CEO of b Authentic inc. You can listen to her offbeat career podcast, "b CAUSE with Erin & Nicole," or you can start pumping up your career with her free guide,"10 Simple Steps to a Rich Career."
She writes that women's business conferences are a "noble idea" — but gender diversity still persists as a big issue in many workplaces. While improving them won't solve the issue at large, looking at their problems is helpful.
These conferences can be dominated by jargon. They don't offer up enough women who have actually done it, and often end up being a time suck for the women they're trying to support.
Instead, give women the tools to change up jobs, and make conferences more creative.

- Business Insider 20:32December 10, 2019This ultra-warm jacket from Patagonia is lightweight and made with 100% recycled down — plus it doesn't make that annoying swishing noiseConnie Chen/Business Insider Before you find yourself chilled to the bone this winter, get a jacket from Patagonia's Silent Down collection ($229-$349), which is quieter and more responsibly manufactured than most other outerwear.
I first tried the Silent Down Jacket ($249), a light, soft, and very warm puffer jacket made from 100% recycled down and 70% recycled polyester, in November 2018.
I've worn it for a little over a year since my initial test, including during a seemingly endless New York winter and on vacations to cold-weather destinations like Alaska and Eastern Europe.
It's one of my most-worn winter jackets because of its comfort, eye-catching color, and ease of packing. That it's also quiet is the cherry on top. Product Embed: Product Name: Patagonia Silent Down Jacket (Women's) Card Type: small https://produktor.businessinsider.com/productCardService?id=5dee7cb7fd9db268724d06d6&type=small&live=true Width: 100% Height: 150%
Rapid footsteps approach, accompanied by a menacing swishing noise. You turn around, bracing to face the worst and — oh, it's just your friend in her winter jacket.
If I were to create a soundtrack of fall and winter sounds, it wouldn't contain the crunch of leaves under your feet or the satisfied sigh after the first sip of hot cocoa. It would mainly comprise the cacophony of coats and jackets being put on and taken off and pushed up against each other on public transportation. It's a small price to pay for warmth, but Patagonia has a line of jackets and parkas, the Silent Down collection, that doesn't pay this price at all. She likes to retreat to “the safety of the scroll and papyrus of earlier centuries”.But in her claustrophobic community during Northern Ireland’s Troubles, it marks her out as a threat. - Guardian 14:00December 7, 2019Sister act: how Little Women has come of age on the big screenIn Greta Gerwig’s new film of Little Women, the March girls wrestle with sexual politics and creative fulfilment. How true is it to Louisa May Alcott’s vision?Greta Gerwig’s new big-screen adaptation of Little Women, the sixth about the March sisters to be made so far, starts with a scene taken from the middle of Louisa May Alcott’s second volume. Almost all the others have begun with the girls’ childhood, but in Gerwig’s film, we first meet an adult Jo March in the New York offices of the Weekly Volcano, where she hopes to place a story – thus setting it up as a film about writing. Along with all the things we expect from this story (coming of age, sibling relations, the challenge of being good), the film is about the relationship of fiction with life, and the challenges and the rewards of writing as a job. The parallels between Jo and her creator, Alcott, are also drawn out by Gerwig, and this adult Jo co-exists throughout the film with the child Jo, who is learning how to write, how to be a woman and, often, how similar these processes can be.Published in the late 1860s, Little Women, for those for whom mentions of Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy do not instantly evoke scenes known since childhood (a book-burning, the shearing of a head of long hair), tells the story of four girls whose father is away, working as a chaplain in the US civil war. They used to be well off, but he was too trusting with his money, and now they are poor; the famed first lines – “‘Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,’ grumbled Jo, lying on the rug” – establish how they feel about it, and some of the ways in which they will be tested. It tells a rather different story depending on whether you read it in the US or in the UK, where the second half is generally hived off as Little Women Wedded, or Good Wives, and often not read at all. - Business Insider 20:36December 3, 2019New York is considering a ban on 'virginity tests' after T.I. said he took his daughter to the gynecologist for hymen checksJohn Lamparski/Getty Images New York state lawmakers are considering banning "virginity testing," in the wake of T.I.'s admission that he accompanied his daughter to gynecology appointments to check if her hymen was intact.
Medical experts say it's a myth that intact hymens prove a woman's virginity.
The bill would penalize and even criminally charge doctors who perform such exams, and would make it sexual assault for anyone to perform the tests outside a medical setting.

As Baroness Benjamin’s achievements are recognised, she looks back at the racism she overcame‘I’m here today because I love you.” That’s how Floella Benjamin, the children’s TV presenter turned advocate for children of all ages, usually begins. Sometimes she says those exact words. Sometimes, like today, she doesn’t have to. Thirty years in children’s TV, first as a presenter on Play School and later as head of her own production company, has made Benjamin adept at communicating not only with children but with the inner children of adults. It’s a skill that can make encounters unexpectedly emotional.“Caring,” she says, that’s the secret. “And meaning it. On Play School, I said, ‘Hello, are you all right?’” She pauses, but maintains eye contact, and suddenly I’m four again, sitting cross-legged and too close to the TV, as her benevolent face smiles out at me. “I’m giving the child a moment to answer back,” she explains. “Because many of the children watching were living in children’s homes, or weren’t loved, or were being abused, and they needed somebody. One was the 60-year-old painter Maria Lassnig; the other was 39-year-old firebrand Valie Export, notorious for plastering Vienna with provocative posters in which her exposed crotch played a central role.Export was a controversial choice for Austria, to say the least. As the organisers stated in the catalogue, back home she was “exposed to continuous obstruction and defamation”. Fearing uproar at the opening, they scheduled two press conferences on consecutive days in the hope of mitigating full-scale outrage. The first was a small gathering of sympathetic press. The second was everyone else and, as expected, they kicked up a storm. Export became a lightning rod of outrage, accused of everything from killing animals to being – God forbid – a feminist. Lynsey Addario/National Geographic
Addario enjoyed shooting pictures at Parris Island both because of the setting's gorgeous lighting and the opportunity to capture the soldiers' transformations.
"The women are so young and they're really transitioning from civilian to Marine, and I like seeing that on their faces," she said. "I think that's fascinating not only visually but psychologically, how training and years of war and every aspect of women on the front lines really reveals something different in people."
Addario was inspired by the women's grit through the difficult challenge.

"The women are exhausted — they've been running on nothing," she said. "For me, it was really inspiring to see, and it was exciting because everything they've been training for for the previous 11 weeks culminates with that. They just have to get through the 54-hour period."

- Business Insider 17:37November 30, 2019The founder of the 'Airbnb of yachts' says the service is attracting millennial women — here's whymartin-dm/Getty Images Jaclyn Baumgarten founded Boatsetter, a peer-to-peer boat-sharing platform in the US, in 2012.
Baumgarten was named to Inc.'s top female founders list this year, alongside women like Magnolia's Joanna Gaines and Bumble's Whitney Wolfe Herd.
Boatsetter's clientele skews younger and more female.
The reasoning is two-fold: Baumgarten says Boatsetter makes the activity of boating, which historically has had a higher monetary barrier to entry, more accessible to all. That inclusion, coupled with Boatsetter's extensive insurance policy and safety measures, allow women, in particular, to feel more at ease using the service.
Visit Business Insider's homepage for more stories. Boatsetter, a peer-to-peer boat-sharing platform in the US, has over 17,000 rentable boats in over 600 locations. Some are bigger yachts, others are smaller power boats; there are half-day charters and multi-day rentals; most come equipped with a captain and some even have an easily identifiable purpose.
"This yacht is great for bachelorettes!" pops up across multiple listings on Boatsetter's website.See the rest of the story at Business InsiderNOW WATCH: Traditional Japanese swords can take over 18 months to create — here's what makes them so specialSee Also:The president of a luxury lifestyle management service for millionaires says there's one key difference in how ultrawealthy Americans and Europeans travel — the degree of planning8 things millennials wish you would just stop getting them for the holidaysA decline in mental health is having the same effect on millennials that the Vietnam War and the AIDS epidemic did on past generations, new report saysSEE ALSO: The former consultant who launched the 'Airbnb of yachts' says she got her business idea after a taking a 6-month sabbatical — and watching her brothers struggle to sell their boats

The serious medical condition Cain experienced, RED-S, seems to be common among athletes of all levels, though higher-level athletes may be most vulnerable.
Female athletes in Division 1 cross-country and track are among those who've been vocal out about the issue. One spoke to Insider.

- Business Insider 18:23November 27, 2019A Pennsylvania bill would require death certificates for fertilized eggs that never implant in the uterusShutterstock Anti-abortion lawmakers in Pennsylvania want to pass a bill that would require burials and, as a result, death certificates for "fetal remains," which in their terms includes any fertilized eggs that never implanted in a person's uterus. Fertilized eggs must multiply to become zygotes and then implant in the uterus in order for a pregnancy to occur. Women, and even their doctors, usually can't tell when fertilized eggs don't implant in the uterus because those eggs typically dissolve in utero and are shed through a woman's menstrual lining every month, making them undetectable.See the rest of the story at Business InsiderNOW WATCH: How to find water when you're stuck in the desertSee Also:T.I. defended his efforts to ensure his daughter hasn't had sex, but his method is medically flawedA woman took hilarious maternity photos at Target and Trader Joe's, and moms everywhere can relateAnal cancer is on the rise in the US, and almost all cases are linked to HPV

- Guardian 14:06November 27, 2019Judy Chicago's extinction rebellion: 'I went face-to-face with a new horror'She’s spent half a century fighting male ‘arrogance’ in the art world. Now 80, the spray gun-wielding American’s latest work is a howl of rage at what we’re doing to the planet Eighty this year, Judy Chicago’s hair is white and violet, and she’s wearing lipstick so plum-dark it registers as black. It’s a strident image that suggests she’s a fighter, which she is: funny and forthright, she has dedicated a career to courageous exploration of difficult subjects, from catastrophic injury to mental illness. Some things, though, can’t be fought: extreme weather has left her grounded in New Mexico, thousands of miles from Gateshead where a retrospective of half a century of her work opened earlier this month. I end up talking to her on a video call. This intervention of natural forces is grimly apposite. Chicago’s show at the Baltic focuses on extinction narratives and human responsibilities to the planet. She has spent the past three years contemplating mortality. The series The End: A Meditation on Death and Extinction turns from Chicago’s feelings about her own death to grief over what we are doing to our environment. “There’s not a lot we can do about the fact that we’re going to die, is there?” she says. “We can’t do anything about our own mortality, but we can definitely do something about what we’re doing to the other creatures on the planet, and [to] the Earth.” Continue reading...

- Business Insider 20:11November 25, 2019A baby was born 'pregnant' with her own sibling and needed an emergency C-section to remove itGetty Images A baby girl named Itzmara was born through a cesarean delivery. Just 24 hours later, doctors performed a C-section on her too because she had absorbed her twin while in the womb.
They diagnosed Itzmara with fetus in fetu, a rare condition where a malformed fetus is found in the body of its twin.
According to the National Institutes of Health, fetus in fetu is very rare, with only one case occurring for about every 500,000 births.
In some cases, health problems related to the condition take years to develop and aren't treated right after birth.
Visit Insider's homepage for more. A baby girl named Itzmara was born through a cesarean delivery and, just 24 hours later, doctors performed a C-section on her too because she had absorbed her twin while in the womb, Mamas Latinas reported in March.
When the mother, Mónica Vega of Barranquilla, Colombia, had an ultrasound at seven months pregnant, doctors discovered she had two umbilical cords inside of her. One connected baby Itzmara to Vega, but the other connected Itzmara to a mass that was her parasitic twin.See the rest of the story at Business InsiderNOW WATCH: People are still debating the pink or grey sneaker, 2 years after it went viral. - Guardian 20:00November 25, 2019Little Women review – sisters are writin' it for themselves in Greta Gerwig's festive treatSaoirse Ronan and Emma Watson head a terrific all-star cast in a wonderfully warm, funny and heartfelt version of Louisa May Alcott’s coming-of-age classicThere’s nothing little about Greta Gerwig’s rich, warm, bustlingly populated and passionately devoted new tribute to Louisa May Alcott’s classic novel of sisterhood. She revives Little Women as a coming-of-age movie, a marriage comedy, a sibling-rivalry drama – and perhaps most interestingly of all, an autofictional manifesto for writing your own life. This is where fledgling author Jo March must negotiate her terms directly with her mutton-chop whiskered publisher (no agent!). She must enforce her own copyright prerogative. She must decide, having created a heroine so clearly based on herself, if a wedding is the only plausible ending to her story, which gives her a commercial bestseller and a materially comfortable life.Saoirse Ronan plays the fiercely opinionated and boundlessly energetic Jo, one of four teenage sisters increasingly faced with genteel poverty in 19th-century Massachusetts, their father (Bob Odenkirk) away serving the north’s cause in the civil war. Thoughtful Meg is played by Emma Watson, Florence Pugh is pugnacious, hot-headed Amy, and Eliza Scanlen the delicate, gentle Beth. Their mother, Marmie, is played with style and easy authority by Laura Dern, and the casting brings into view a slight facial resemblance between Dern and Ronan. James Norton plays John Brooke, the diffident, penniless tutor who is to capture Meg’s heart; and Professor Friedrich Bhaer, the middle-aged German academic who is to be Jo’s fatherly suitor-slash-mentor in New York, is reinvented as a considerably younger and dishier Frenchman played by Louis Garrel.
